How do fires affect insect populations and diversity? Tune into the BugScope to meet two authors of this freshly published peer reviewed paper on the affects of fire on bees, beetles, and butterflies: Responses from bees, butterflies, and ground beetles to different fire and site characteristics: A global meta-analysis. 'Across 100 studies and 445 effects, we found that bee biodiversity increased after fire'. What else have they learned? What are the new questions that arose for them from completing this research? Learn this and ask your own questions when you tune in live!

Vaughn Shirey is a current PhD candidate in the Ries Lab of Butterfly Informatics at Georgetown University in Washington, DC. Their research interests include the impact of global change processes on arthropod communities, particularly those of alpine, Arctic, and boreal ecosystems. They are particularly interested in the use of museum collections, archives, and photography to answer these questions. Dr. Stephen Mason graduated this summer from Drexel University with his PhD (woo!). His research mainly focuses on fire effects on insect communities at the macro scale (which we will talk about today) and also at the local scale within the NJ Pine Barrens and Valley Forge National Historical Park. His goals are always to help conservation managers make more informed decisions and predictions that involve biodiversity.
This fall, Steve begins a tenure track position at Immaculata University in Pennsylvania.
In his free time, Steve enjoys naturalizing in new places, work on jigsaw puzzles, and play Pokemon Go.
